Our Purpose

gtGallery employs the principles of access, best practice, excellence and value for money as central to all aspects of its ever-evolving portfolio of visual arts activities.

gtGallery is primarily a neutral venue for the presentation and education of contemporary visual art and associated activities. Reconstituted in 2001 with the aim to provide an environment where all the residents of and visitors to Belfast, can experience, engage with, participate in and evaluate a programme of high quality contemporary visual art.

gtGallery is committed to furthering a platform for local and international contemporary visual artists, and fostering an environment that positively impacts on their long-term sustainability.

gtGallery actively promotes Belfast, Northern Ireland as an important centre for the production and evaluation of contemporary visual art, through partnership and participation in the development of local, national and international networks.

gtGallery maintains a responsive relationship to the visual arts infrastructure and continually seeks to realise innovative pilot projects that can positively challenge preconceptions and best exploit new opportunities.

THE GOLDEN THREAD GALLERY
Who are we? What do we do?

gtGallery exhibits a wide variety of work in different mediums such as video, installation, sculpture, sound, prints, painting and photography, and we're often asked if the work is for sale. In the past we haven't always had the prices on the wall, as sometimes we feel that it can detract from the view of the exhibition. However, the majority of the work that we have shown has always been available to buy. If you are interested in a piece and the price isn't on the wall, just ask a member of staff and we'll get you a price list.

In addition to the main exhibition spaces, we're developing a dedicated sales space, which will show works by the artists that we represent. Over the past few years we've worked closely with a number of artists and have represented them commercially at Art Fairs and in private sales – if you'd like to find out information about any of these artists just ask a member of staff.

The artists that we currently represent are: Carbon Design, Martina Corry, Colin Darke, Allan Hughes, Brendan Jamison, Lisa Malone, Susan MacWilliam, Conor McFeely, Dougal McKenzie, Locky Morris, Philip Napier, Dan Shipsides, Gary Shaw, Victor Sloan, Una Walker and Charles Walsh.

As we are a publicly funded space, and therefore our running costs are subsidised, we are able to sell work at very competitive prices. As we are a not-for-profit company with charitable status, any of the proceeds from the sale of work is reinvested into the gallery and the artists. You've heard of Fair Trade – well we like to think of ourselves as being the equivalent Fair Trade for Artists. By the way, it's also possible to purchase works that we've shown in previous exhibitions – just contact a member of staff and we'll look into it for you.

In addition to showing at least 7 in-house exhibitions a year, gtGallery also organises a range of Touring exhibitions. In the coming year we will be touring Out of the Darkness – 40 Years of the Northern Irish Press Photographers Exhibition, as recently seen in the Ormeau Baths Gallery. In recent years these have included Dogs Have No Religion (Siamsa Tire Theatre, Tralee), Surveiller and Collective Histories of Northern Irish Art: Icons from the North (Solstice Arts Centre, Navan), Revolving Ambiguity (The Grove Gallery, Downpatrick), Through Our Eyes: Belfast (The Painting Centre, New York), Tiny Open Spaces (La Sala Naranja, Valencia), Drawing a Line (The Grove Gallery, Downpatrick), Urbane (The Grove Gallery, Downpatrick), No Topless Bathing, Belfast has Suffered Enough ( La Sala Naranja, Valencia), Surveiller (Static Gallery, Liverpool), The Short Span (Millenium Court Arts Centre, Portadown). Gallery staff will be happy to help if you're interested in hiring a show for your venue, or if you just want to find out where you can view other gtGallery exhibitions.

While we mainly exhibit contemporary art, over the last couple of years we've developed a series called Collective Histories of Northern Irish Art. Each of the exhibitions in the series has a guest curator who has a specialist knowledge, lived experience, of Northern Irish Art. We've taken the period from 1945 to the present, so as to create the much-needed context to contemporary Northern Irish practices. So far, we've realised four exhibitions in the series: Post War Pre Troubles (curated by S.B. Kennedy and Brian McAvera), Icons from the North (curated by Brian McAvera), The Disembodied Eye (curated by Liam Kelly) and The Double Image (curated by Dougal McKenzie. We aim to do twelve exhibitions all in all, each one with a hardback, substantially illustrated book. The first four books are on sale now and can be purchased from staff.

To date, gtGallery's largest audiences have been achieved in exhibitions held outside our own premises. Our Touring Exhibitions at the Grove Gallery in Downpatrick regularly have over 4000 visitors and in the last two years, when we have been represented at the London Art Fair, over 45,000 people have had the chance to view gtGallery work.

The Golden Thread Gallery has been showing innovative contemporary art since 1999 when it originated as part of the Flax International Arts Centre. In 2001 it was reconstituted and became the Golden Thread Gallery Limited, a company recognised as having charitable status by the Inland Revenue. Throughout this period the gallery has put on 64 exhibitions and worked with over 170 artists.

GtGallery strives to act as a platform for both local and international artists and as a venue that promotes culturally relevant and internationally engaged art practices. Often the exhibitions focus on particular aspects of the local, but they always relate to the international sphere.

While it may be no surprise to hear that we've often collaborated with artists, you may not have known that we often work in collaboration with community and youth groups. While we were based on the Crumlin Road, we did a whole series of projects with residents from the Ardoyne and Shankill areas, such as Plan X, the now notorious rocket launch. Many of our community projects were facilitated through being a partner in the Ardoyne Shankill Health Partnership, who we are committed to working with for at least the next three years.
